Early generations of Deep Springers rode the narrow-gauge railroad, nicknamed the "Slim Princess," up the Owens Valley. Stations were east of the towns on present-day Highway US 395. The Big Pine station was named Zurich.

This is more than a year after the 1969 floods, but the canyon bottom was still scoured to bare rock. This waterfall was about 6 feet high and blocked passage for cattle.

Caption on back reads "CASPER, WYOMING, 1912 - L to R - Harold Owen, William Alexander, Chas. Pitzer, Mr. Cruse, and John Van Etten Late in 1912 Mr, Nunn acquired an existing small steam-power plant in Casper -- where oil had recently been discovered. Mr. Nunn here installed the first full Diesel enstallation[sic] in this country. Diesel was installed in new power plant by Alexander. Rudolph Diesel visited this installation."
