Early generations of Deep Springers rode the narrow-gauge railroad, nicknamed the "Slim Princess," up the Owens Valley. Stations were east of the towns on present-day Highway US 395. The Big Pine station was named Zurich.

Deep Springs Mary was one of the last Paiutes resident in Deep Springs Valley, and did laundry for the early students. Husband was Deep Springs Harry, who worked as an irrigator at the ranch.
