Maybe typical to name the vehicles rather than the people, particularly the one with the food. Wallace Cook was DS20, served LL Nunn as his personal secretary shortly before his death. Don't know if his Model T being on this trip meant he was also along. DEC, 1/2017.

Caption reads, "Tule George - An indian who got drunk last summer." Perhaps Walter could have done better than that for a caption, but the history of Native Americans at Deep Springs tends to reflect attitudes like this. This got better in later years, but I think there were fewer of them were around as time went on, compared with the early days of the college. This is the only reference I have ever seen to Tule George. Nicknames were bestowed by whites - Deep Springs Mary, Captain Harry, etc. There is a Tule River tribe, in the southern San Joaquin Valley near Porterville, but I don't know if George would have been from that tribe. It's also a more general term for the tule reeds that grow in wetlands. DEC 1/2017
