Early generations of Deep Springers rode the narrow-gauge railroad, nicknamed the "Slim Princess," up the Owens Valley. Stations were east of the towns on present-day Highway US 395. The Big Pine station was named Zurich.

This is more than a year after the 1969 floods, but the canyon bottom was still scoured to bare rock. This waterfall was about 6 feet high and blocked passage for cattle.
